Who We Are

Mercy Tree Ministries is an IRS recognized 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Our focus is on helping single parents see beyond their need and find hope through the connection with caring Christians.

With over 20 years experience in transitional benevolent ministry, we know what it takes to provide practical solutions to impossible situations. Some people need help because they are in temporary crisis, such as a recent separation, job loss, or unexpected expenses. In today's economy, many people who have typically cared for themselves are suddenly finding themselves in need. Others have had a lifetime of poverty or near poverty and don't know how to begin moving from it. In fact, they don't even know that they can. Still others are in families where someone is struggling with addiction. Regardless of how they find themselves in need, their crises has limited their resources, perspective, and strength.

Mercy Tree Ministries was birthed as a result of visions coming together for one purpose--to serve disenfranchised families who needed practical help and support.

In 2002, Marty Duren, Lead Pastor at New Bethany Baptist Church at that time, was researching church attendance in the community and found not only were families not getting the spiritual and emotional support that a faith-based community provides; they were not getting the practical help they needed. Putting his longtime desire to reach out to the needy and provide services into action, he founded Mercy Tree Ministries with Brenda Armstrong and others to begin providing food and financial assistance to families in the community.

From 1995 to 2003, Brenda Armstrong worked with Larry Burkett and Crown Financial Ministries to develop a comprehensive training program for single parent ministry leaders. Brenda recognized from personal experience and Larry recognized from years of financial counseling that single parents were among those that needed the most support. Statistically that continues to be true.

Brenda took the lead as director in 2003 to take Mercy Tree from a one-church ministry to a community outreach that included pregnancy resources, job training, food and financial assistance, and budget training.

After years of direct ministry providing thousands of dollars to needy families, raising ministry support, and developing strong community collaborations, Mercy Tree Ministries' board and staff realized a pressing need to focus on building other ministries to serve single parents. Partnering with premier centers across the country, Mercy Tree provides the most comprehensive training for leaders. We are currently working on online training modules. Ultimately, building a ministry model that meets the top 10 needs of single parents and other needy families is our heartfelt prayer.
